Co-working… from home office? Greenhouse can help!

Life has changed completely these days. We have been asked to both stay home and work remotely with extremely short notice. This can be a painstaking and frustrating change for people who are used to going into the office or working in a Greenhouse co-working space. Here are some tips to continue working productively from home, because even though we won’t be able to see all our coworkers for a while, we’re still thinking of you. And we are counting down the days until we can reopen.
Organise your workstation
Step one for mandatory remote work over a longer period: take the time to set up a professional workstation. Try to recreate your workstation in the office as much as possible: choose a quiet room in the house, ideally with a lot of daylight.
Work at your desk – in a healthy sitting position: where possible, adjust your monitor height so the top of your screen is at eye level. Clear your desk often and air the room now and then: a well-ventilated, tidy and organised workstation will inspire you and it creates a sense of calm.
And, last but not least (and we’ll admit that this can be tempting): try not to work in your pyjamas (at least every day). Dress as if you were going into the office every morning. By dressing as if you were leaving the house, you will already notice a very big change in mindset. We guarantee it!
Create structure in your days
If at all possible, try to maintain the same frequency and structure as at the office when planning your day. Start every day by reviewing your schedule – and set deadlines. Stick to the structure that you would normally have at the office: work, break, work, lunch, etc.
Don’t live alone? Have house mates or children to take into account? Then try to make clear agreements so you can work productively. Agree to take a break with them at certain times, which is fun for everyone!
Finally, a really handy tip: do you need to work on some high-focus tasks? Then start with them first thing in the morning. Your mind tends to be fresh and clear in the morning, meaning you’ll be less inclined to be distracted by other things.
Don’t forget your colleagues
While you may not get to see your colleagues for the time being, this doesn’t mean that they aren’t there! In fact, they are all in the same boat as you, and like you, they are all looking for the best way to cope with this situation. So be there for each other – and don’t isolate yourself from them.
Plan sufficient (video) calls to stay in touch with each other – and try to have as many scheduled meetings and consultations go ahead as planned. This will not only have a positive effect on the quality of your work, but it will also safeguard your mental health. We are social animals, after all, so do what you can to maintain that social contact. Remember: social distancing does not mean social isolation!
Take good care of your body
Now more than ever, it is vital that you take good care of your body! And while it’s easy to forget to do this at home, you can already achieve quite a lot with a good mindset and set rules. Here are our tips:
- Drink enough water and choose healthy snacks.
- Get up regularly while working to avoid sitting still for hours. This also works wonders for your concentration.
- Remember to exercise! You can still go out for a walk or go cycling, so do it! You can also continue to do your regular workouts at home, with YouTube videos or you can use your gym’s app. And… dancing in the kitchen is also always a good idea!
- A good night’s sleep is essential: so stick to your usual sleeping routine. Get at least 7 hours of shut-eye!
Self-care, self-care, self-care!
Spending that much time on your own for so long – between four walls – can soon start to weigh on your mood. Good mental well-being is currently the top priority for getting through this period, so make sure to do those little things that also make you happy. Call your loved ones frequently, or video chat with them, enjoy a relaxing bath, spend a day in the kitchen or take some time to read your favourite book. Whatever makes you happy and calm!
